Newcastle Teachers and Parents: Happy 2020!
With a new year/decade ahead, many of us are talking about our hopes, dreams, and goals. Discussing this with the children in our lives is a great opportunity to model the importance of setting goals, and making them achievable. There are so many ways we are goal-setting throughout the day (getting to work on time, getting ourselves to the gym, preparing a meal) that we may not realize the little steps we are taking to reach them that can be communicated to our kids. The prefrontal cortex, the goal-setting and problem-solving part of our brain, is rapidly developing in children, and helping them identify goals and determine the baby steps to reaching them is essential to that development. Here and here are some great articles discussing not only how to set goals, but how to help your kiddos persevere through challenges and set-backs along the way. Some great kid-friendly books on setting goals and persevering: · Goals are for Gals & Goals are for Guys by Doris & Duane Burke · Jabari Jumps by Gaisa Cornwall · Inch and Miles – The Journey to Success by Coach John Wooden · Mindset Matters by Bryan Smith
